Since it was founded on June 18, 2005, Etsy has made many changes to its platform, terms of use and fees accross the years.

However, it has recently made a huge change that has sparked anger and frustration among some sellers, and made them consider moving to other seller-friendly platforms.

According to the BusinessofApps.com website, Etsy has over 7.3 million sellers, with the number of new sellers expected to reduce since these updates.

Etsy has introduced three major updates to its platform:

  1. Stricter identity verification method.
  2. Change in payment schedule.
  3. New set-up fee for new sellers.

The first two changes are positive for customers, since they provide more security for purchases, however, the last change with the introduction of a set-up free has sparked anger among those wanting to enrol as an Etsy seller.

So, what is the set-up fee and how could it impact new sellers?

Etsy has decided to put in place a $15 setup fee for new sellers in order to introduce a stricter barrier to entry and push away sellers who are used to using free platforms to get started.
